When we walk
We arrange a programme of attractive and varied walks within an area that is centred on Surrey Heath Borough in the north west corner of Surrey. There are usually 2 walks each week, on Sunday and Tuesday mornings. You can attend as many, or as few, walks as you want.
The most popular walks are 5 to 6 miles which we complete in 2½ to 3 hours depending on the terrain. Longer walks of 9 or 10 miles feature regularly, shorter ones occasionally. The walks give those taking part an opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the countryside as well as find out about points of interest along the way. It is our aim to make the walk an enjoyable experience for all concerned. The friendliness of our group is the comment most often made by visitors.
Where we walk
Centred, as we are, on the borders of Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire our local walks feature locations in all 3 counties. We opperate in a sensible travelling distance of Surrey Heath Borough. Situated in the north west corner of Surrey, the Borough includes Camberley, Bagshot, Lightwater, Frimley, Deepcut, Mytchett, Windlesham, Chobham, Bisley and West End.
A final recce of all our walks is done close to the date to comply with our risk assessment obligations. It is therefore recommended that you check the final walk details a few days before in case of any changes.
If late news is available about a walk then it will be displayed on Our Walks Programme and on the Home page.
Such news might be a change that has become necessary since the programme was published, or a report by the walk leader on ground conditions (for example how muddy the paths are) following a late reconnoitre of the route.
We cannot guarantee that any or all late information about a particular walk will be available here. If you have any questions about a walk then phone the walk leader.
Where to start
There is no charge for joining one of our normal walks, your membership of the Ramblers' Association covers the group's overheads and entitles you to participate in as many, or as few, walks as you wish. Visitors are welcome to try out walking with our group for a few walks without any charge, more than that and we would expect that you to join The Ramblers.
Joining a walk
Numbers on each walk may be limited. Please check the walk details.
Should you have any questions about the walk or want further details then you can phone the walk's leader whose name and contact phone number are given (but please remember that our leaders are all volunteers and if they are not available when you call please phone back at another time rather than leave a message and expect them to contact you).
You can attend as many, or as few, walks as you want.
Country footpaths can be expected to be uneven and muddy in places. Suitable stout footware should be worn, together with outdoor clothing appropriate to the season. Most walks will involve crossing stiles.
Persons under 18 years, and vulnerable adults
Persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult such as a parent or guardian. Written or verbal consent is not sufficient.
Adults who are unable for whatever reason to walk or care for themselves independently must be accompanied by another adult such as a carer or support worker who takes responsibility for their care. If appropriate please contact the walk leader to discuss the nature of the route in order that you can make an informed decision as to whether it is suitable.
We follow the Ramblers policy on Safeguarding, details of which, together with guidance for participants and leaders can be found on the Ramblers website.
Refreshments
Walks of 2 - 3 hr duration will include a short 'banana' break. You may like to bring a drink, piece of fruit, chocolate bar, etc to eat. There are no shopping or litter bin facilities at the places we stop, so you need to bring what you want and take your litter home with you. Morning walks may offer an optional lunch following the walk. This will typically be at a pub near the end of the walk. Longer walks are likely to include a lunch break and walk details will indicate whether you need to bring a packed lunch or whether lunch will be taken somewhere where you can buy a meal.
About a specific walk
If you want to enquire about a specific walk or event then please phone the leader whose contact number is given in the details of the walk. All our leaders are volunteers, so if they are not available when you call please call again later.
Other resources
Other resources available to find walks include the Ramblers Walksfinder, and Surrey area groups.
As well as the local walks programme we arrange occasional social activities and group holidays. We also help to ensure that our area's footpaths are clear and maintained.
Leaders planning walks on MoD land should notify MoD's agents in advance in order that they may be informed of any training activity taking place. Please see the guidance Walking in MOD areas
