As Britain’s largest walking charity, the Ramblers helps everyone to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors on foot. We are fortunate in Surrey in having over 2,000 miles of rights of way, along with many areas of open access land managed by bodies such as the National Trust and Surrey Wildlife Trust.

The Footpath Secretary for the group along with Volunteer Path Wardens and others cover the Surrey Heath area to preserve and improve our footpaths and walkways. They survey our footpaths, investigate and report any issues, organise working teams to repair and replace stiles, signposts and to clear overgrowth and obstacles. They work with the local authorities with regard to development proposals, rights of way, pedestrian access and safety. While out walking, if you encounter a path in the local area that needs attention, please report it to the Footpath Secretary.

Working in co-operation with the Surrey CC Countryside Access team, we are always looking for volunteers who can help with these tasks. You can find more details of upcoming tasks and locations in the News and Events section on the home page. 

Working Party

The working party jobs include:

• repairing and/or replacing stiles, some with kissing gates
• erecting finger posts
• clearing vegetation
• general maintenance of paths If you would like to join our team and are not on our current email list, please contact the Footpath Secretary.

Advice for maintenance volunteers

• The team will supply tools and equipment, but please bring your own gloves.
• Please wear old clothes (not shorts). Don’t forget your waterproofs if raining or damp. Please wear strong leather boots if you do not have steel toe capped boots.
• Training is provided in the use of brush cutters. Please note prior training and steel toe capped boots are mandatory for using brush cutters.
